MSM's 40th Anniversary Celebration Continues at 122nd GSMA Convention
June 10-13, 2015 – Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) continued its 40th anniversary celebration at the 122nd Annual Georgia State Medical Association's (GSMA) Convention and Scientific Assembly in Hilton Head, SC. MSM’s presence was big at the annual event as faculty (both current and former) made presentations, speeches and held receptions.
MSM sponsored the 122nd GSMA’s Welcome Reception, where MSM President and Dean Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice spoke and gave a warm welcome to all the attendees. Dr. Rice also spoke at the Annual Family Health Luncheon, where she promoted healthy eating and exercise – two of Dr. Rice’s passions. Additionally, MSM’s Dr. Yolanda Wimberly gave an in-depth presentation updating attendees on Graduate Medical Education. And in the spirit of celebrating MSM’s 40th anniversary, MSM’s first president, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, whose book "Breaking Ground: My Life in Medicine" won him the 2015 Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, hosted a Presidential Reception and book signing.
The annual GSMA convention, which began in 1893, features several programs, workshops and discussions where medical and science professionals educate and share the latest information on medical treatments, finances, scientific developments, technology, and ways to reduce health disparity.

Georgia State Medical Association, Inc., (GSMA) is the state affiliate of the National Medical Association (NMA). The Association was founded in 1893 under the leadership of Dr. H.R Butler of Atlanta, Dr. G.N Stoney of Augusta, Dr. G.S. Burns of Augusta, Dr. W.H. Harris of Athens, and Dr. A.S. Hartley of Savannah. Originally the Georgia State Medical Association of Physicians, Dentists, and Pharmacists, the Association's name was later changed to Georgia State Medical Association to be consistent with its true membership.
GSMA operates with the state of Georgia and gives voice to the concerns of African American physicians and their patients. The GSMA is a non-exclusive organization that works to represent its members in all medical, scientific, legislative, public health and other related matters. Membership in the Association is open to all reputable and legally qualified physicians in the state of Georgia. Working with other organizations, the GSMA is committed to bringing about radical change in healthcare in the state, for the benefit of all of its citizens. Members of Georgia State Medical Association serve on the faculties of all medical schools in the state of Georgia - Morehouse School of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, the Medical College of Georgia, and Mercer University School of Medicine.
The administration office of the Association is located on the campus of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. The association meets quarterly in different location in the state, and holds its Annual Convention each June.
